IDS COVID-19 Intervention Background:
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) according to world health Organisation (WHO) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. The virus has infected over 2,222,636 with reported 146,828 deaths and 542,568 survivals. The first confirmed case of the pandemic of coronavirus disease was 2019. Nigeria first case was announced on 27 February 2020. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) report on the April 18, 2020 indicates 493 infected persons in the country, 159 have been treated and 17 persons confirmed death. COVID-19 has no knowing cure, the best way is to prevent and slow down the transmission.
IDS COVID-19 Strategist Interventions:
- To Intensify COVID 19 Awareness campaign targeting women/girls, children and other vulnerable people affected by humanitarian emergency in Nigeria focusing on detection, prevention, response and control. The beneficiary will be provided with risk communication and community engagement skills to prevent and contain the spreads of the Coronavirus epidemic across the country.
- Production and free distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) including face-masks, sanitizers, hand washing soap and hygiene kits like reusable sanitary pads (RSP) to help prevent and contain the spread of COVID-19 and support vulnerable women and girls in humanitarian emergencies manage their menstruation during lockdown.
- To conduct an operational research, develop and distribution of information, education and communication (IEC) focusing on prevention and preparedness, social distancing (Stay Home, Safe Lives), effective hands washing with soap and how to recognize common symptoms of the virus.
- Provision of palliative to vulnerable women/girls, children and other groups impacted by humanitarian emergencies with focused on internally displaced persons(IDPs), host communities and persons living disabilities.
